Bold Insight’s Gavin Lew talks about humanizing experiences with artificial intelligence at Intellus Worldwide event

Gavin Lew, Managing Director of Bold Insight, presents Humanizing Experiences with UX-focused AI at the Intellus Worldwide Regional Event in Chicago, Illinois on September 11, 2019. In his talk, Lew will discuss the value of user experience (UX) design and integration for artificial intelligence endeavors. He will also offer insight into why artificial intelligence (AI) has failed in the past, why it’s heading that way again, and key consideration factors to make sure AI is successful.

“As AI begins to permeate into health systems, now is the time for the industry to apply a UX framework based on context, interaction, and trust that optimizes use, acceptance, and user integration of AI-driven endeavors,” commented Lew. “The challenge is that AI needs to focus less on being artificial, and more on how we make it work with humans to solve real problems.”

With a deep expertise in medical device research, the Bold Insight team frequently presents at healthcare-related events and contributes to industry standards. Read our latest health news.

Bold Insight’s Korey Johnson featured in AAMI’s latest BI&T journal focusing on early use-related research for medical devices

Bold Insight’s Korey Johnson featured in AAMI’s latest BI&T journal focusing on early use-related research for medical devices

A roundtable of experts was featured in the July/August 2019 issue of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) bimonthly journal, Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology (BI&T). The discussion, Early Research into the Operational Context of Device Use Is Needed, highlighted trends, value, and various roles of early use–related research of medical devices. Bold Insight’s Managing Director Korey Johnson, a frequent presenter and active member in the human factors research community, was asked to lend his expertise to the dialog.

“It was a great experience to connect and discuss with my peers a topic we are all passionate about,” said Johnson. “Most of us are involved in developing standards and defining best practices for this type of research, so we appreciate any opportunity to answer questions and share our perspectives with members of the healthcare technology management community who are tasked with executing this research. Our goal, as human factors practitioners in healthcare, is to do more than ensure safe and effective use at the conclusion of the product development process. We aim to make humans and the human experience central to the entire development process. AAMI is a respected resource for furthering industry standards and best practices. Convening this roundtable discussion on early use-related research is a great example of the organization helping to push the industry in the right direction.”

Bold Insight’s Gavin Lew to highlight medical devices and human factors at Intellus Worldwide Summit

*Gavin Lew, Managing Director of Bold Insight, will present at the 2019 Intellus Worldwide Summit Insights Evolution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 20, 2019. In his talk, Medical Devices & the Human Factors of Health, Lew will describe the regulatory environment for new product development involving medical device delivery. He will also detail how human factors research can be applied to advance product design and improve success.

“Because regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, now require human factors research on the design of a medical device to ensure safe and effective use, there is an opportunity for market research to support this effort during the early exploratory phase of a product lifecycle,” commented Lew.

5 charities win during Bold Insight’s HFES Health Care Symposium exhibit

Held in Chicago, this year’s Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Health Care Symposium featured some notable topics, while encouraging industry collaboration to continue to advance the human factors field within the health care space. Bold Insight had a strong presence at the conference, chairing two panels and presenting three posters. In addition, our exhibit was a conference highlight that featured a classic claw machine game where attendees could not only win a Bold Insight prize, but also have the chance to choose one of five charities to which the company would donate $100.

Excitement was high throughout the two days and the five charities chosen by attendees included St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The Alzheimer’s Association, Cavalier Rescue USA, Littleton Community Farm, and Bravo Waukegan.

“As a cornerstone of our company mission, giving back to the community is something we try to integrate into every event we are a part of,” said Bold Insight’s Managing Director Korey Johnson. “We have hosted similar efforts in the past where attendees chose where we donate in a fun, gaming environment and we wanted to bring that fun to the HFES Healthcare Symposium exhibit floor, which we definitely did.”

Bold Insight’s HFES presentations included:

  • Panel: Pre-certifying excellence in digital health: Human factors and user experience perspectives, chaired by Bold Insight’s Korey Johnson, with panelists Bob Nesbitt (AbbVie), Mick Rakauskas (Baxter), Hanniebey Wiyor (FDA), Karen Kazak (Eli Lilly and Company)
  • Panel: Human factors and medical device instructions for use: It’s not just good business it’s the law, chaired by Bold Insight’s Sam Alper, with panelists, Korey Johnson (Bold Insight), Jenny Covington (Bowman and Brooke LLP), Steve Arndt (Explico Engineering Co.), and Joy Borgardt (AbbVie).
  • Poster: Procedural context in simulated-use evaluations: It’s not training, Katie Pingrey, Ashley Chiu, Korey Johnson
  • Poster: Replicating home setups when testing with vulnerable populations, Anke Adenwala, Yvette Granger
  • Poster: Telehealth and remote patient monitoring: Interface functionality and design considerations for patient support apps and patient management portals, Tobias Langer, Korey Johnson

Bold Insight awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification

Bold Insight, a user experience (UX) and human factors (HF) research agency, is proud to be awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification from NSF-ISR. Achieving certification is a demanding process that includes a rigorous audit to demonstrate Bold Insight’s conformance to quality assurance and information security standards, as well as, controlled processes that ensure excellence in the training and development of its researchers, participant recruitment, vendor management, and development and execution of research protocols. This globally-recognized certification represents Bold Insight’s commitment to quality and, ultimately, its customers.

“A certified quality system is the framework for ensuring excellence in service delivery for our customers,” said Bold Insight’s Quality Manager, Andrew Zawisza. “Operational excellence is necessary to achieve this certification and requires commitment from the entire organization. The Bold Insight team was eager to support this initiative. I’ve never seen a company achieve this so quickly, and with no identified nonconformances.”

Being ISO 9001:2015 certified is especially important when working in the medical device human factors space, and when working with large enterprises that have robust vendor management processes in place. These organizations find it easier to work with ISO-certified partners because the certification demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement in the delivery of services for which they are seeking partnership.

Bold Insight Managing Director, Korey Johnson, added, “With the amount of research that we conduct in the medical device UX and HF space, it was never a question that we would obtain ISO 9001:2015 certification. Our investment in Bold Insight’s quality system is a demonstration to our customers of our commitment to provide them with the best possible experience when working with us as their research vendor. We are thrilled with how efficiently Andrew developed and implemented our quality system and look forward to using it to ensure we are constantly improving the services we provide for our customers.”
