Case study
Helping a gaming company talk to kids about online safety
Challenge
A gaming company came to us because they needed to rewrite their privacy and safety messaging for kids. The UK’s child protection regulations had changed, and their existing messages were too long, too technical, and not very engaging.
Solution
We sat down with child-parent pairs in the UK. Kids tried out new safety messages in a prototype. We asked them what they remembered, what made sense, and what didn’t. After that, we talked to the parents to get their take on what felt age-appropriate and clear.
Impact
The kids were honest: some messages confused them, others they ignored. Big text and fun graphics helped. Wordy, formal language didn’t. The parents helped us understand what language worked across different ages and what sounded patronizing.
Bold Outcomes
- Identified message formats that kids understood and remembered
- Flagged graphics and layouts that made the content easier to follow
- Offered guidance to make messages clear without dumbing them down
- Helped the team stay compliant without losing kids’ attention
Result
The company simplified their messaging and redesigned how it was delivered. Now, the safety guidance is something kids can understand and use without needing an adult to translate it.
