Improving safety and clarity for surgical mesh procedures

A surgical device manufacturer developed a next-generation mesh implant that offered clinical improvements but required changes to the implantation procedure. They needed to evaluate whether surgical teams could perform the revised procedure safely and how well packaging communicated the necessary updates.

We recruited representative surgical teams and conducted simulated implantations using porcine models in a hospital simulation lab. Our researchers observed team dynamics and interactions with the revised instructions to assess procedure adherence and identify usability gaps.

The simulations revealed where surgical teams struggled with the new procedure and how packaging contributed to confusion.

The manufacturer adopted our packaging and labeling updates, ensuring safer and more consistent surgical mesh implantation across clinical teams.
