Trusted human-centered research for federal programs

Our experience in user-centered design and human factors research extends to government agencies working to improve public services. From improving health information systems to guiding disease prevention programs, we help governing bodies understand what works, what doesn’t, and how to improve the user experience for patients, healthcare providers, civil servants, and citizens.

We help government teams design better services through evidence-backed research

Our team includes experts in healthcare UX, human factors engineering, human systems integration, accessibility, and digital transformation. We speak the language of government procurement and have a proven track record of successful partnerships with agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Why federal agencies choose Bold Insight

regulation

We understand the complexity of government systems

Government services must meet the needs of a diverse population under strict regulations, accessibility standards, and legacy infrastructure. We’ve worked with teams inside the VA, including the Human Systems Integration (HSI) team, to bring clarity and consistency to systems that serve millions of veterans and providers.

usability

We improve usability where it matters most

We helped the Veterans Health Administration assess and redesign critical health information systems by conducting interviews with physicians and nurses, heuristic reviews, and literature analysis. Our work gave the VA a roadmap to reduce user pain points and improve system performance.

We supported the DARPA to make data-driven design changes that supported operators’ context of use in mission-critical use scenarios. Our insights provided the direction necessary to ensure that system design supported timely and accurate reactions to real-time dynamic data.

data

We help you make data-driven decisions

Our research with patient-aligned care teams (PACTs) helped the VA design dashboards that support early detection and management of chronic kidney disease. We also helped create memory aids to reduce the mental workload on primary care providers. These tools now support better care decisions without adding complexity.

integration

We strengthen human systems integration

When the VA rebranded its Human Factors Engineering Division to HSI, we helped define the program’s purpose, outcomes, and value proposition. We also worked closely with leadership to map communications strategy and improve internal visibility, enabling stronger cross-team collaboration.

How we work with government teams

Flexible, fed-friendly project management
We understand the structure of federal projects and have supported agile, waterfall, and hybrid delivery models. We offer GSA-friendly engagement structures and work as a direct vendor or subcontractor to meet your agency's needs.
ISO-9001 certified
We follow a documented, independently verified quality management system. Our ISO-9001 certification reflects our commitment to consistent processes, continuous improvement, and high standards in every engagement.
Accessible and inclusive research
We follow WCAG and Section 508 guidelines and design our studies to include diverse participants, ensuring that your service works for everyone, including users with disabilities, veterans, older adults, and non-English speakers.
Custom methods for real-world impact
We tailor our research methods to your mission. This includes usability testing, journey mapping, co-design workshops, diary studies, and mixed-method research, all of which are always grounded in human factors best practices.

Past government projects

Improving VA health information systems

VA health system usability evaluation

We worked with the VA’s human factors team to review electronic health record systems and identify design barriers for clinical users. We delivered heuristic assessments, provider interviews, and design recommendations that improved workflow efficiency.

Supporting CKD care with better tools for PACT teams

Panel management dashboard for CKD care

We supported the design of a tool to help primary care teams track chronic kidney disease risk. Through provider interviews and iterative design sessions, we helped reduce cognitive burden and clarify data presentation.

Repositioning the VA's human systems integration programs

Human systems integration strategy

We collaborated with the HSI division to define and promote the purpose of five interconnected programs: human factors, systems engineering, training, safety, and applied systems analysis. Our work shaped internal messaging and improved alignment across the VA.
